The Healthy Writers Club

Shallee McArthur is an uber-talented science fiction and fantasy writer who just signed with Hannah Bowman of Liza Dawson Associates. I'm so excited to have her as an "agency sister," and I'm also excited to join her Healthy Writers Club. Here's what she has to say about it:

"As writers, we hear a lot about the "butt in chair" tactic, which is great for our manuscripts, but not so great for the actual butt in the chair. Hence the Healthy Writers Club. If you're game to join the fun, you can run, walk, bike, make a healthy dinner, play tag with your kids, etc. Then, post about it on Friday (or whenever you want). Sign up here!"

I jumped on this opportunity, because my butt has been doing a lot of chair-sitting lately. As a matter of fact, my butt has been chair-sitting nearly non-stop lately, and I hate it because I feel like I've lost sight of the active, healthy side of myself.

Stress has been a HUGE part of my life for the last several months. I have a tendency to burrow inward and disappear inside myself during times of trouble; I also have a tendency to bury myself in comfort food. I have a very weak immune system to start with, so this is quite the recipe for disaster.

I am in the midst of making some life changes, and my goal is to begin exercising (and eating nourishing, real food) by Friday, October 12th. This gives me two more weeks to wrap up some important things, and then I will begin with a vengeance.

(I have so many plans, but I won't bore you with my details. Instead, I will put my money where my mouth is, and I will PROVE how serious I am about this soon enough!)

How about you? How do you balance your writing life and your fitness? Please click on Shallee's link above if you'd like to join in on our fun!

I echo your thoughts and am making those same big changes. All the elements are in place: I have a hula hoop and a place to go swimming (two separate plans ^_^) Now all I need is accountability. If you'd like an exercise check-in partner, let me know. ^_^

I balance writing and exercise by staying up late and getting up early. :P Sleep deprivation, my old friend...

I hope the exercise helps you feel less stressed! Good luck wrapping things up and getting started!

Good job making a change, and good luck with it! Like you, I don't eat as well as I should or exercise enough, especially when I'm stressed or down, and the resulting body image issues just make me feel worse. It's a vicious cycle. The only thing that really, really works is to record my calories and exercise in one of the online calorie trackers. There are a lot of good ones out there for free. Yay for the internet!

Exercise is "literally" (do you watch Parks & Rec) what keeps me sane. I've pretty well given up losing much weight, but I can't deny that my stresses seem like no big deal when finished with a gym workout or after a long walk. I hope you feel similarly refreshed!!

Stress is my downfall. I DO NOT handle it well at all, and need the exercise more than most. Since I just joined the site, I hope to be able to post something exciting next Friday. Good luck with your projects, I'm with you on the difficulty of finding that balance. Maybe this club we'll get us all there. It can't hurt.

Eating healthy is a very big change - and so important. It's a step in the right direction. I got a bit off track after having out-of-town visitors, but I hope to get back on track next week.

The Vampire Diaries everyday for lunch...er, while on the elliptical. (iPads are wonderful devices!) I find that thirty minutes of hard cardio 6x a week, plus 15 minutes of weights each time, gets my muse fired up. He's a fat arse, you see, and when my endorphins start kicking--he wakes up.

oh, man, Lisa! This is so hard. I struggle to get at least two runs in a week. But it's tough with work and school and kids not old enough to be left home alone. Time just slips away so fast.

I love this Healthy Writers Club, though. It's so important to get up and move. Hope you're doing great! Good luck with all your projects! :o) <3

I've started working out this week! It's so easy to start feeling horrible when you're sitting in a chair too much. Good for you!

Until about 10 months ago the answer was twofold "no, I don't believe in balancing fitness in my writing life." and "pass me the bag of munchos, would you?" Then running happened to me. I swear, I didn't mean it to, but it just did. And with it so many things got better. Writing got better - thinking got better. My butt is less 'chair' shaped and I'm a running addict. So happy to hear about the Healthy Writers Club. Going to go sign up now!

I'm right there with you (both of you)! Until two weeks ago, I had become totally dormant, and just sat at the computer for 9 hours at work, then sat at the computer at home. I started a 10 minute daily cardio challenge. Just 10 minutes, every day, no excuses. It's definitely making me feel better.

I've got the "get my butt outta the chair" part down, but -- grits my teeth here-- the siren call of carbs and sugar is going to kill me. Yes. Start. Thanks for the added motivation.

This challenge is such fun. I'm really embracing it. Small steps, but I hope it's going to make a difference.

It is a great challenge and has that little spark of accountability. I love that. I hate that. Go us for facing and embracing our bodies, minds and souls.
