My Four-Month Mark

Well, it's official. My first full manuscript request has been under review for four months today. My other three full requests have all passed the one month mark, and I am absolutely freaking out in anticipation.

Four months! I have felt every single moment pass, and most have crept by with a nauseating, slow tightness and a sense of unbalance--one that settled in my stomach in early February and hasn't budged since.

I am NOT a patient person, I HATE surprises and I DON'T take unrealistic risks. I still can't believe I embarked on this journey, and I simultaneously want to pat myself on the back and punch myself in the face for this. (I have also obsessively convinced myself that my submission to this first agent must have gotten lost in cyberspace. She's a lightning fast responder, and four months seems like twelve lifetimes for her.)

My question is this... For those of you currently in the midst of this process--or those of you who have already graduated to the next stage of submissions (i.e., the dreaded publisher hunt)--how in the world do you stay sane??

Everyone says I should distract myself, go on vacation or start my next project. And although I've piddled down about 25 pages of my next project, I'm so amped up and unbalanced that my creativity has dried up like Colorado soil after a rainstorm.

A perfect case in point. "Colorado soil after a rainstorm?" Really?? That's the best simile I can come up with? ... Did I just end a sentence with a preposition? Did I even spell "preposition" correctly? ... Am I actually too lazy to check? Yep, looks like I am...

Ugh, I know what you mean! ANOTHER project? But this one isn't really done yet! lol. I wish I could afford to take a vacation, although I fear I'd just be biting my nails, wishing I could check my email ONE LAST TIME. I try not to focus on it, but it sure is hard!

It's the worst but working on another project does make the time go by. Even if it's just an outline or character sketches. But wow! 4 fulls out?!Go YOU!

Hang in there!! My advice is power through the WIP - even if it ends up crap! (Which I rather doubt it will.)

The more annoyed you get with it and how much of a struggle it is to get out, the less time and energy you have to stress out about queries!

ugh i know how you feel. I have half a dozen fulls under consideration as well. Waiting is way harder than i thought it would be, especially when i see all these stories of other people getting agents...
For me, i decided to start another novel. I won't lie. At first it was hard because i kept thinking about the other MS in the query trenches, but now it's going better and it helps to keep my mind off the fulls.
Also, completely off topic - i am TOTALLY an amateur cryptozoologist and i love that you are too!!!

Sorry, typo in the first one...

BELIEVE me, I'm there with you even now. And yeah, it does take a toll on the creative muxe. Hang in. If you can't write on the WIP, find another way to weedle out some wordage, maybe a short story or poem. Just try not to stop writing completely. BTW, have you sent a stat check yet? If four months is a long time for this agent, you might need to give a little nudge and make sure she did indeed receive it. Just a thought!

I have nothing to add to the previous comments except for "there you go!" trying to encourage you. Waiting is hard, but at least somebody is actually reading something you wrote. That's great!

@Beckah-Rah: Imagine the two of us attempting a vacation together. We would be such a horrible mess! ;)

@cautionary tale: Outlines and character sketches, eh? Hmm, that actually perked my interest a little bit. I think I might actually be able to manage that!

@Kalen: Excellent point! And it makes me soooo happy to know you and I are in exactly the same boat here!

@Falen: Holy crap, you have SIX out?? I knew you had a bunch, but I didn't realize you had six! Wow, that's incredible... Your time is coming soon, I'll wager!

@Anita: You know what? I value your opinion so much that I just may send out a status check. I hate feeling like I'm being high-maintenance, but what if she DID lose it, you know?? Thanks for the suggestion... I've been waffling , but I think I'll feel so much better if that simple question is answered... For better or worse!

@EEV: Sometimes all you need is a "there you go!" And you're right... The thought of a perfect stranger snuggling up somewhere to read what I wrote is pretty awesome. I need to remind myself of that. Thank you! :)

I wish I knew! I'm still waiting for the first full M/S request. I'm just about to send out a few more copies, actually. Spread my eggs around a few more baskets, so to speak.

Congrats on getting the requests, though! That's a huge step, as are they all, I guess.

Good luck!

...patience is unfortunately a must in this business, and like you, a personality trait I'm quite thin on. Four months...ugh. Good luck!

Love your photos, by the way. You kept me scrolling...and scrolling ;)

OMGosh how exciting and nerve wrecking at the same time.

If you can, just try to forget about it and remodel your house or something. :)

Best wishes to you .. keep us posted!

You must be ready to pull your hair out! I couldn't even imagine...though hoping to get the chance one day:) Too bad you can't shoot an email to the agent and ask what's going on. That would be me, total stalking and turning the agent off. I'm sure you will hear something soon. Maybe the longer it is out the better?

Well, maybe this will take your mind off it for a moment. I tagged you on my blog:)

I'm right there in your boat, except I am not being nipped by an errant dolphin! I also advise getting into the next WIP. It really is the only way to survive the brutality of THE WAIT. Even if you write sucky stuff (and it won't be as bad as you think, even if you have a dangling something or other) you will be moving forward into the future instead of staring at the wall. Or into the maw of a sea lion.

I'm not in your boat, but if I was, I'd be freaking flippin.lol. Working on another project is my suggestion. : )

Pretty soon your going to get an offer and then you'll get the fun job of emailing all those other fulls to let them know. The responses will come in within hours (and hopefully multiple offers as well). Best of luck. I'm excited to be a new follower to your blog. I'm sorry it took me so long to follow you.

Definitely start on your next project. :)

@craighallam: Thanks so much for your kind words, and best of luck with your queries! (Isn't it crazy how obsessive we become about sending out more? It's almost become a nervous tick for me!)

@Elliot: I'm so glad you like my animal pics! I've been slobbered on and smacked more times than I can count, but I wouldn't trade it for the world!

@pleasure: Your blog is beautiful! I'm so glad I found it!

@SophieLi: Hahaha, I'm kind of MacGyver-ish when I choose to be, but I will happily live in squalor before I'll remodel a house! ;)

@JennyPhresh: Oh my God. I actually just laughed out loud when I read this--and I rarely laugh out loud, even when I think things are funny. You are freaking awesome.

@Charlee: Woot! Woot! So excited to stop by!

@Eliza Faith: Hahaha, freaking flippin' is a PERFECT way to describe me right now!

@Marewolf: Yesssss! Two laugh-out-louds in one post! I can't wait to check out this link!

@Kate: Holy smokes, if only I could be so lucky, and thank you so much for following my blog! I really, really appreciate it!

@J.A. Beard: You know, I think there's just no way around it. Gotta get back to work eventually... Might as well try to do it now!

LisaAnn said...

@Deana: Holy smokes, how did I miss your post? But yesssss, I totally want to be a stalker... This is miserable!!!

Girl Parker said...

Hang in there, LisaAnn!!! I agree with the suggestion of just checking that the agent has it. You can do this!! I can cue up the Rocky Theme, if you need it.

Elliot Grace said...

...thanks Lisa for stopping by my blog, and yes, Blogger is misbehaving once again, leading to the disappearance of my follower button. Shameful computer woes...

In any sense, it's back.

"I simultaneously want to pat myself on the back and punch myself in the face for this" ... one of the best lines EVER!! Nicely done.

LisaAnn said...

@Girl Parker: I did it! I finally sent another email to her, but I still haven't heard a peep. Although I'm bummed, I keep telling myself that she could have VERY easily just rejected me when she received it. The fact that she didn't is still giving me a (tiny) glimmer of hope!

@Elliot: On my way back for Attempt #2!

@Fresh Garden: That means a lot. Thank you. :)

@Donna: Thank you so much! Lots of photogenic babies... Makes things easy for me!

@Squirrel: Hahahahaha, glad you liked it! We can all sympathize with that feeling, I'm sure! ;)
