Did you know prairie dogs don't just have one call for "danger?" They actually have one call for "human," another for "hawk" and a third for "coyote." They can even differentiate between coyotes and domesticated dogs. I'm kinda digging this just-released prairie dog communication article: New Language Discovered... Prairiedogese?.

Anchorage Unveils Crystal Gallery of Ice

One of my favorite Alaskan traditions is the winter unveiling of Anchorage's Crystal Gallery of Ice.  Each year, dozens of international teams work feverishly for 48-hours to turn blocks of ice into works of art. Using chainsaws, chisels and other tools, the sculptors are fascinating to watch and always draw a large crowd.  Check out this year's gallery on the Anchorage Daily News' website...  Very bummed I couldn't see it in person this year...  Crystal Gallery of Ice 2011
